All acne starts out the same with the blockage of skin pores which leads to clogging of oil and bacteria in the hair follicles. However, when they bulge outwards, different conditions causes them to develop into either whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, and cysts.
Whiteheads results from a blockage deeper within the pores. There is no drainage path and oil starts to accumulate. This causes their yellowish or white color. Whiteheads are more likely to lead to inflammation.
Blackheads forms when the pore blockage is closer to the surface of the skin. Once it is exposed to air, it turns black. It is a common misconception that the color of blackheads is caused by dirt in the pores. Unlike whiteheads, blackheads do not become inflamed.
Pustules develops when the wall of the plugged follicle breaks. The area swells and turns into a red bump.
Cysts occurs when the wall of a plugged follicle breaks deep within the skin. They are larger, red, inflamed, and more serious. Cysts are more likely to leave behind scars.
